Fiji
The Republic of Fiji is made up of a group of islands in the South Pacific.
The largest islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Other islands include Taveuni, Kadavu, Gau and Koro. Suva, on Viti Levu, is the capital of Fiji. The main islands have volcanic origin while some of the smaller islands are coral or limestone.
Europeans and Americans did not arrive in the islands until the early nineteenth century. Between 1860 and 1870 a number of colonists settled in Levuka, the old capital of Fiji.
Fiji was annexed by the United Kingdom in 1874. The British introduced labor from India to work on the plantations. Independence was achieved in 1970.
Fiji has one of the most developed economies of the Pacific islands. The services sector contributes substantially towards the economy. Agricultural products include bananas, coconuts, cassava, sweet potatoes and rice. Sugar is one of the largest exports. Fishing, especially the tuna catch, is an important industry. Other industries are mining (gold, silver), timber, building materials, construction, sugar-milling, copra, clothing and footwear. Tourism is a very successful sector in Fiji's economy.
While English is the official language, Fijian and Hindustani are also taught in schools. 50% of the population of Fiji is Christian. The rest are divided among Hindu or Muslim.
Cassava, taro, sweet potatoes and breadfruit are eaten with chicken, pork, beef and fish. Coconut milk, ginger, lime, chili and garlic are used as cooking ingredients. Rice is also a popular food. Indian cuisine has been made popular by the Indian community settled there. During traditional feasts, meat, fish and vegetables are cooked in a lovo, an underground oven.
