North America (General description)
The term ‘North America’ signifies different things to different people. While some think North America is only United States and Canada, in some sections of Europe and Latin America, people talk of Americas as a large solo continent, with North America as being part of it – consisting of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Being the third largest continent after Asia and Africa, North America occupies nearly 16.4% of the world surface area. Surrounded by many oceans, for example, the Arctic Ocean , North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, North America remains connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama. North America is the fourth most-populated continent in the world, after Asia, Africa and Europe.
People from different and diverse races have made North America their home. The three most important ethnic groups who live in North America are whites, Mestizos and Afro-Americans. Additionally, there is a large number of other minority groups, living in North America.
In North America, the United States and Canada share a common link – both owe their origin to British settlers. Because of this very powerful historical tie between the two nations, there is today a strong economic and cultural bond between the two. They share similar social cultures, though they are two different nations. Then there are North Americans who speak Spanish. These people are descendants of the Spanish settlers. Interestingly, in Mexico, which lie in the central region, and where civilizations like Maya originated from, still maintains their own traditional customs and rituals. Their culture is more similar to the Caribbean nations which are also pre-dominated by Spanish speaking population.
Canada and the United States are the richest and most advanced nations in North America, while the countries of Central America and the Caribbean are much less developed. Mexico, which is presently undergoing large-scale industrialization is a country, economically speaking, truly lies somewhere in between.
