Central African Republic
The landlocked country of he Central African Republic (CAR), as the name suggests is situated in Central Africa. With Bangui as the capital, the country is bordered by Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo.
A number of military governments ruled the CAR in the decades following independence in 1960. A multi-national African military force has been deployed in the CAR since 2003.
Most people in CAR live by agriculture and forestry as their main profession. Food crops are cassava, millet, sorghum, yams, bananas and coffee. Cotton is also grown.
The main export items are timber and diamonds. Other resources are uranium, gold, oil and hydropower. Industries include assembly of bicycles and motorcycles, soap, textiles, footwear and brewing.
While French is the official language, Sangho is the national language. A number of other languages are spoken. Nearly half of the people are Christians. Others are Muslim, or follow indigenous beliefs.
Cassava is a staple food in the Central African Republic. Cassava and sorghum are made into porridge and served with sauce. Stew, with fish or meat, is also popular.
Vegetables and fruit available include carrots, cassava, okra, plantains, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, citrus fruits, mangoes, and papayas.
Beer, produced from bananas and sorghum, and palm wine are local alcoholic drinks.
