Burkina Faso
Bordered by Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo and Ghana, Burkina Faso is situated in Western Africa with Ouagadougou as the capital.
Burkina Faso, previously known as Upper Volta was colonized by the French towards the end of the nineteenth century which resulted in the country becoming a territory of French West Africa in 1919. In 1932 Upper Volta was divided between Cote d'Ivoire and French Sudan. Upper Volta became an autonomous republic within the French Community in 1958. The country gained independence from the French in 1960 and Upper Volta was renamed Burkina Faso in 1984.
Cotton is an important product of the country. Other crops cultivated include maize, millet, rice, sesame, shea nuts, sorghum and groundnuts. Natural resources are limestone, marble, gold, copper, zinc, manganese and phosphates. Industries include cotton lint, soap, cigarettes, textiles, agricultural processing, and beverages.
Half of the people of this predominantly rural country are Muslim. Majority of the other half follow traditional beliefs and a minority of the people are Christians.
Porridge, made from maize, millet or sorghum flour, is a staple food in Burkina Faso. Sauces are also an important part of the daily diet. Rice with sauce is a typical meal. Fish and chicken are eaten. Vegetables grown are beans, cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, okra, onions, peppers, plantains, radishes, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes and yams. Fruits include bananas, coconuts, limes, mangoes, oranges, papayas, pineapples, strawberries and watermelons.
