Algeria

The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is situated in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco. Algiers is the capital. Other cities include Annaba and Oran. The Sahara Desert covers over eighty-five percent of the country.

From the French colonization which began in 1830 Algeria became an overseas department of France in 1848. The Algerian war for independence from France began in 1954. Independence was achieved in 1962.

The country is a member of OPEC (the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) being an important oil and gas producing country. Other resources are iron ore, lead, phosphates, uranium, and zinc. Industries include construction, light industries, electrical products, petrochemicals, and food processing. The agricultural sector employs a small percentage of the working population. Agricultural products are wheat, barley, oats, olives, grapes and citrus fruits.

While Arabic is the official language, Tamazight, the Berber language, is recognized as a national language. Majority of the people of Algeria are Sunni Muslim.

The most important dish in the country is Couscous, with meat and vegetables, is the national dish. Rice is also a staple food. Chickpeas, onions, tomatoes and peppers are eaten. Seasonings include coriander, cumin, fennel, mint and paprika. Soups, stews and kebabs are very popular amongst people in the country.
