The first settlement known in Rockford, dates to 1834-1835; in 1839, Rockford was incorporated as a village and in 1852 chartered as a city. Prior to the 1850’s Rockford remained pretty much as a country place up until the advent of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad and the organization of the Rockford Water Power Company in 1952, after which the city picked up the industrial pace of the times and became a major growing industrial center focused in agricultural machinery and furniture manufacturing. During the 20th century the industrial activities of Rockford shifted towards machine tools, automotive items, aerospace, packaging devices, and heavy machinery seeing a particular expansion in the manufacturing sector during the 1960’s. Early 1990’s Rockford experienced some financial depression that lead the city to a high rate of unemployment and crime that has ever since been fought with relevant success by the government of the area.
