Named by the Spanish after the Mexican aborigine word for “place of Mexitli”, an
Aztec god and leader, New Mexico was the 47th state to join the Union. New

gold, lead, and molybdenum. The Land of Enchantment State is not only rich in

publishing, petroleum and coal products, chemicals, transportation equipment,
