The name of this state is derived from an Indian word meaning “father of Waters”
or “great river” (there is some discussion on the origins and meaning of the
word). Although Mississippi’s economy has seen some diversification in the past
half-century almost balancing agricultural and industrial activity, the
agricultural sector is still larger than any other one with a varied production
of products lead by cotton and soybeans. Other agricultural products include:
corn, peanuts, rice, pecans, eggs, poultry, meat animals, sugar cane, dairy,
