Named after the Chippewa Indian word meaning “great water/great lake” Michigan
was the 26th state to be added to the Union. With 97 state parks and
recreational areas, the more than 10,000 inland lakes, and forests of the
Wolverine state serve as a major source of jobs, recreation, sport and tourism
in the wood and fishing sectors. Nonetheless, the major contribution to
Michigan’s economy is represented by industry sectors like motor vehicles and
parts production (first in the US), prepared cereals, hardware, furniture,
machine tools, airplane parts, and refrigerators production. Other important
contributors in the industry sector include the production of iron, copper,
salt, lime, cement, gypsum, gravel, iodine, and bromine. From the agricultural
point of view, Michigan produces apples, cherries, beans, grapes, potatoes,
pears, and sugar beets.
