Named after the Delaware River and Bay, this state was the first one to enter
the Union (as its nickname discloses). Thanks to Ëleuthère Irénée du Pont’s
initiative to establish a gunpowder mill in 1802, Delaware’s chemical industry
is a major element in the state’s industry contributions. Other inputs from the
industrial sector towards Delaware’s economy include medical supplies,
vulcanized fiber, textiles, paper, machine tools, automobiles, rubber and
plastic products, printing and publishing, and food processing (US pioneer in
the food-canning industry). The agricultural contributions to the First State’s

soybeans, corn, poultry, nursery stock, and dairy products are the main items.
