Anthropological research shows sings of human occupation of the area known today as Anchorage as early as 3,000 BC. The Athabaskan Dena’ina people, who were the native inhabitants of the area when Europeans discovered this territory in 1756, displaced the original inhabitants of the land, the Eskimos, between the years 500 AD to 1650 AD. Although the first European explorer of the area was Captain James Cook in 1778, Russian settlements where already established by 1784 and their culture and activities expanded in the area for a time span of a hundred years until the land became property if the United States in 1867. Up until the 1920’s Anchorage’s economy was sustained by the railroads and mining activities. After the thirties, and especially during and after the 1940’s, Anchorage’s military expansion became the main reason for its growth and development. The economical and population boom of the 1940’s and 1950’s was followed by the devastating consequences of the 1964 earthquake known as “The Big One”, but already in the 1970’s and 1980’s the trans-Alaska pipeline system and the oil industry bestowed over the City of Lights and Flowers a bright economical and cultural present and future. From the 1990’s up until our days, tourism has joined the lines of important income contributors of Anchorage City.
