Movers Guide - What you Need to do
Before your Move
Moving Checklist
In order for your move
to go as smoothly and painless as possible,
it is important that you make yourself a
moving checklist, so you can keep track of
everything you need to do before your
scheduled moving date. In order to give
yourself enough time to pack and get all
your affairs organized, you should start the
moving process and your moving checklist
about two months before your moving date.
About 2 months before
your scheduled move is the time to start
getting things organized. At this point,
your checklist should include various
categories for your belongings. There should
be a category for what you want to keep,
what you want to sell, and what you’ll be
discarding or giving away. You’ll also
want a checklist for transfers of
information you’ll be making, such as
medical history, your children’s’ school
records, address changes, etc. It is also
possible to start packing now. You may have
belongings that you want to move to your new
home but will not use. These items can be
packed ahead of time. You don’t have to
pack all of your belongings at once. Get a
lead on it and start packing now. This is also the time to make a final
decision on whether you’ll be using a
moving company, which moving company
you’ll use, and set a date for your move.
About a month before
your move is the time when you want to
really start packing the belongings that
you’ve decided to move to your new home.
This is also the time to schedule a garage
or yard sell for the belongings you want to
sell and to start throwing or giving away
the belongings you don’t want to sell or
take with you. This is also the time that
you want to confirm all the moving details
and your moving date with the moving company
that you’ve chosen. If you haven’t
picked a mover, this is the last chance to
do so. If you choose to move your belongings
on your own, then you should begin
contacting movers about renting a moving
van. With a month left before your move, you
should also get out your checklist and see
what information you need to transfer to
your new location at this time.
Within the 3 weeks
before you move, things will begin to
intensify. Your packing should be in full
swing and almost completed. The valuable
items that you are moving should be
catalogued and kept in a safe place. If you
are taking your car with you on your move,
you should get your car checked and looked
over to make sure it’s running properly.
If you plan on having your car moved, now is
the time to hire auto movers. At this point,
you also want to confirm all your details or
make any needed changes with your movers.
With less than a month to your moving date,
you should be getting all of your affairs in
order, including all of your and your
family’s and pets’ medical history,
school records, address changes, bank
information, etc. You should also be
checking to see when you need to cancel your
current home’s utilities.
When moving day
arrives, it can be stressful, but your
checklist will enable it to be organized.
Double check that all of your packed
belongings are in order and labeled. Consult
your checklist to see if there’s anything
you’ve forgotten to do or pack. Make sure
you or some one you trust is with the movers
when they come to start packing up your
home. Help the movers in any way you can.
Keep your checklist handy to ensure that the
movers are loading your belongings into the
moving plan. You should also make sure and
keep track of the belongings that you are
taking separately from the movers. When the
movers are ready to travel to your new
location, take down their information and
give them yours, so you can stay in touch
during the move. Do a final sweep of your
house. Give all necessary information and
documents to whoever’s taking care of your
house after you move. You’re ready to move
to your new home.
